Bringing apples
The Parent Protection Act (PPA) will provide 24 hrs/year unpaid, job-protected leave for working parents to attend their children’s school conferences; for the employee’s own medical appointments, or to take a child, parent or spouse to medical appointments such as checkups or immunizations. The bill has been reintroduced with bipartisan support. The Georgia Job/Family Collaborative, made up of more than 50 women’s, community and labor organizations, has coordinated annual Capitol Education Days, bringing hundreds of elementary and middle school students to meet with legislators about the bill. We worked with the PTA to have high school students deliver bushel baskets of Applegrams with pro-PPA messages to key legislators. Several committee hearings were packed with supporters and included testimony from health and education professionals, disability activists, parents, students and small business owners. For 2009/10 the Parent Protection Act is a legislative priority of the Coalition of Advocates for Georgia’s Elderly (CoAge), bringing the voice of seniors from across the state to the Capitol. CoAge leaders are also meeting with business leaders to request their support for this legislation.
