Eliseo’s Story

I am a resident of Ward one in Washington DC.   I have worked in the construction industry for 14 years. In all my time working, I have never received paid sick days.  In 2009, I went to the hospital and the doctor told me I have Type 2 Diabetes. Since then, I have had to take medicine every day to control my diabetes. Additionally, I have to go the doctor for a check-up every 3-4 months.

My most recent job was for a demolition company. I began working for this company in 2011. We do demolition projects in buildings all over Washington DC. In July, I had an appointment scheduled to see my doctor. I showed my supervisor a note from the doctor that explained the purpose of the appointment and asked for permission to miss a day of work for the appointment.  The supervisor responded simply, saying I could not miss work. Not only did he not pay me for the day, but also he did not even give me permission to miss the day of work, unpaid, to go to my doctors appointment. Every time I ask permission to go to an appointment, I think: this time, the supervisor will let me go because I have a note explaining that I need to go to the doctor, however he still has not given me permission.

Two weeks ago, I missed my third appointment. Suddenly, I received a call from my health insurance company, Amerihealth DC, saying they had canceled my insurance because I missed three appointments. They told me it seemed that my health is not important to me.  In result of losing my health insurance, I can’t get the medicine I need to take everyday for my diabetes. All of this happened to me because my employer did not think it was necessary or obligatory to give his workers paid sick days.

My health is important to me. My work is also important to me. If both are important to me, how can I keep working if I am not allowed to give some attention to my health?

A person doesn’t know when they are going to get sick. It is not right that a person has to worry if they can or cannot go to the doctor if they need to. No person should have to wait a year to get sick or to go to the doctor.
