Leticia’s Story

Vivo en New Brunswick, soy miembro de New Labor.  Yo trabajo en un restaurant de comida rápida y no tenemos días de enfermedad pagadas. Yo soy mama de dos niños, una niña de 7 años y un niño de un ano. En el 2008, mi hija estuvo hospitalizada por cinco días, yo perdí tres días de trabajo y no me fueron pagados.  Cuando yo llame para avisar que no podría trabajar,  se molestaron un poco, no entiendo porque que no nos pagan los días que no vamos a trabajar. Yo estaba preocupada cuando se llega el día de pagar la renta, no me alcanzaría el dinero para pagar las cosas que tenemos que pagar. A veces cuando nos enfermamos o se enferman nuestros hijos nuestros empleadores nos pidan notas médicas para probar la falta, e igual no recibiríamos pago por la falta, simplemente necesitan las notas médicas.  Nosotros para poder presentar una nota médica, tenemos que pagar la visita al doctor seria al mínimo cien dólares, y es un gasto que no nosotros no estamos para hacerlo.  A mí me gustaría que aprobara la ley de días de enfermedad pagados porque es muy importante que cuidemos a nuestros hijos cuando se enferman, sin tener que preocuparnos porque después nos faltan el dinero de pagar las utilidades en la casa como renta, luz, y todas las cosas que necesitamos.

I live in New Brunswick, and I am a member of New Labor.  I work in a fast food restaurant and we don’t have paid sick days.  I am a mother of 2 children; a 7 year old daughter and a 1 year old son.  In 2008, my daughter was hospitalized for 5 days and I missed three days of work that were not paid.  When I called work to let them know I was unable to go to work, they got a little upset which I don’t understand since we don’t get paid for the days we don’t go to work.

I was worried that when it came time to pay rent, I would be unable to afford rent and the other things we have to pay for.  Sometimes when we get sick, or when our children get sick, management asks for medical notes to prove the reason for our absence, either way we don’t get paid for [sick days], they just need the medical note.  And for us to be able to have a doctor’s note, we have to pay to see the doctor and [without health insurance] we have to pay at least 100 dollars, and this is an expense that we can’t afford.

I would like the paid sick days bill to become law because it’s very important for us to be able to take care of our children when they are sick without having to worry because we don’t have enough money to pay for utilities, rent and electricity and all the things we need.
