Elizabeth – Caring for Dying Loved Ones Means Not Caring for Self

As the only children in both parents’ families, my sister and I are relied upon for caring for our aging family. We now are responsible for three members with chronic or terminal conditions that require significant time and energy, in addition to maintaining our own health. With paid family and medical leave, I wouldn’t have to work when I’m sick to save time so that I can travel to care for these family members. I am now choosing between going on a “bucket list” vacation with my dying mother or saving that time to care for her in her last days. I also am unable to start a family because I won’t have enough paid leave, nor do we have enough saved after emergencies to float maternity leave or time to care for three loved ones.
