Building Black Women’s Power in Michigan

Mothering Justice and the Black Women’s Roundtable brought nearly 200 women to Wayne State University in Detroit recently to talk about “The State of Black Women in Michigan.” Attendees included recent college grads wanting to get involved in politics, public health workers that focus on such areas as prenatal care and mental health, poets and writers, and activists from groups like Restaurant Opportunities Center-United, MI Equality, the NAACP, MI United, and Food Justice.
Many participants were already active in the statewide campaign to win paid sick days through a 2016 ballot initiative; others took petitions with them, eager to build support.
