Dwayne – Qualifying to Care

I work for Fred Meyers, which is part of the Kroger food chain. On December 19, 2016 I donated a kidney to a non-relative. The Fred Meyers chain has a policy of providing short-term disability benefits if you work 1,200 hours the previous year. However, that year is considered to be a calendar year. I did work 1209 hours from December 14, 2015 to December 14, 2016. However, that was not a calendar year, therefore I did not qualify.

Kidney failure is considered to be having a creatinine level of 4.0. The person I donated to had a level of 9.0. If I would have waited until January 1, 2017, he may have passed away.
