Family Values @ Work Urges Congress: Reject Budget Cuts That Harm Working Families and Invest in Care Policies

Statements

Family Values @ Work urges the House of Representatives to reject the Senate-passed reconciliation bill, which would strip essential support from millions of people instead of funding the policies families need to thrive.

Rather than dismantling the social safety net that workers fund with their tax dollars, Congress should prioritize building a government that meets people’s needs—through policies like paid family and medical leave, paid sick and safe days, and affordable child care.

The current budget package would have devastating, measurable impacts by:

  • Leaving 16 million people without health coverage by gutting Medicaid, threatening health care access, and eliminating nearly half a million health care jobs by 2026.
  • Reducing SNAP benefits, putting 8 million people – families with children, elders and people with disabilities – at risk of losing some or all food assistance.
  • Disrupting access to child care for millions of families, destabilizing local economies and deepening the child care crisis.
  • Costing jobs in communities across the country, offering zero meaningful improvements for working people, while lining the pockets of billionaires.

By targeting Medicaid, TANF, SNAP, and child care funding, this budget will deepen economic insecurity and destabilize families who are already facing rising costs and limited options. These are not “extras” that can be cut—they are essential supports that enable people to care for loved ones, participate in the workforce, and maintain their health and well-being.

Family Values @ Work’s interim Executive Director, Liana Cassar, issued the following statement:

“We need a functional and funded government to support workers and their families with our tax dollars and we need it now. As an organization dedicated to paid time to care, we understand the interconnectedness of all social safety net programs. Any cuts made to SNAP, TANF, Medicaid, or any other program will have ripple effects that will harm millions of families.”

We urge Congress to reject this budget plan and instead invest in policies that strengthen families, communities, and the economy as a whole.
