National care and worker justice network welcomes former U.S. Department of Labor leader and Rhode Island state senator, Gayle Goldin, to guide next chapter of growth, collaboration, and policy impact

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Family Values @ Work today announced the appointment of Gayle Goldin, longtime policy leader and movement strategist, as its next Executive Director.

Goldin brings decades of experience advancing equitable care policy, worker protections, gender equity, and economic justice at both the state and national levels. A policy analyst, strategist, and former Rhode Island state senator, Goldin served as deputy director of the Women’s Bureau in the U.S. Department of Labor during the Biden–Harris administration, where she provided executive leadership to the only federal agency mandated by Congress to focus on the needs of working women.

During her tenure at the Women’s Bureau, Goldin oversaw a broad portfolio of policy priorities, including paid leave, paid sick days, child care, gender-based violence and harassment, and gender equity. After leaving the Women’s Bureau, she joined The Century Foundation in a one-year fellowship, where she continued her work on the care economy.

Prior to her federal service, Goldin served as campaign advisor to Family Values @ Work, supporting grassroots coalitions nationwide working to advance care legislation and national paid family and medical leave policy. She also previously served as strategic initiatives officer at the Women’s Fund of Rhode Island, where she led gender equity policy development, managed grant-making initiatives, and directed the Women’s Policy Institute.

As a Rhode Island state senator, Goldin successfully championed the passage of Temporary Caregiver Insurance, making Rhode Island the third state in the nation to establish paid leave and the first to guarantee workers the right to return to their jobs after taking leave. Throughout her legislative career, she also led efforts to expand affordable child care, protect reproductive rights, address gender and racial wage inequities, raise the minimum wage, improve health care access, and strengthen democratic participation.

“The Family Values @ Work Board of Directors are thrilled to welcome Gayle Goldin as our next Executive Director,” said the Board Chair of Family Values @ Work. “Gayle has been a steadfast champion of economic justice for America’s workers and families for decades. As a state senator in Rhode Island, she partnered with network members and coalition leaders to secure legislative victories that expanded paid leave protections for millions of Rhode Islanders. Following her service in the senate, Gayle deepened her leadership within the care movement by serving as an advisor to Family Values @ Work, helping strengthen Rhode Island’s Temporary Caregiver Insurance program, supporting victories in additional states, and contributing to the launch of the OASIS Leadership Network, a mentoring hub for progressive new legislators.”

The Board Chair continued, “Gayle’s leadership at the Women’s Bureau during the Biden administration further demonstrated her ability to champion transformative care and workplace policies impacting millions of women and families nationwide. We are confident she will steward Family Values @ Work to new heights through her visionary leadership, collaborative approach to movement building, and deep belief that state and local care movements are creating the momentum necessary to secure national care policies for workers and families across America.”

Family Values @ Work is a national network committed to building a world where economic security and the ability to care exist in harmony. The organization supports state-based coalitions and grassroots leaders working to advance paid family and medical leave, paid sick days, child care, and broader care and economic justice policies. Through movement building, technical assistance, leadership development, and cross-state collaboration, FV@W works to ensure that the experiences and leadership of workers and families shape policy solutions nationwide.

Goldin’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment as the care movement builds momentum toward federal legislation following more than two decades of state-level policy victories that have strengthened economic security, workplace dignity, and caregiving support for millions of workers and families.

“Family Values @ Work has long understood that transformative policy change begins with the leadership, lived experiences, and organizing the power of people in the states,” said Gayle Goldin. “I am honored to lead this extraordinary network and excited to work alongside staff, partners, coalition members, funders, and advocates nationwide to strengthen movement infrastructure, deepen collaboration, and continue building the future we all deserve.”

Goldin holds an undergraduate degree from McGill University and earned her master’s degree from Tufts University.
