When Family Values @ Work started our network 14 years ago, we were a group of 8 state coalitions. That number has now grown to 27 with the addition of two new states! We’re delighted to welcome Hawaii and Nevada!
Hawaii Children’s Action Network and Hawaii Appleseed are helping lead the fight for paid family leave, alongside economic justice and children’s advocates and labor allies. Together, the Working Families Coalition is fighting for paid family leave, paid sick days and an increase to the minimum wage. In Hawaii, a state with a population of just under 1.5 million, almost 250,000 people serve as family caregivers. With a high cost of living, the nation’s fastest growing population over 65, and scarce and unaffordable childcare, Hawaii has reached a critical tipping point and workers are turning to state lawmakers for smart solutions for working families in 2018.
Helping to amplify the voice of black women leaders in Nevada is Make It Work Nevada. They have been partnering with other statewide organizations to build support for issues like paid time to care, along with highlighting the need for child care and for equal pay. The group is committed to “putting people’s lived realities at the center of politics. In Nevada, we are developing new leaders who are deeply engaged in their own communities and creating change from the ground up.”
