California Home Care Workers Will Now Have Paid Sick Days

Sacramento: Today Governor Jerry Brown is signing SB 3 (Leno) – a $15 minimum wage bill into law that will impact millions of workers. This is a victory California workers – fast food, home care, child care, retail workers – have fought long and hard to make happen. For many, an increased wage means not having to work a second job. It means being there to tuck kids in at night or take them to school in the morning. And for IHSS home care workers, it means finally being able to take a paid sick day for themselves or their families. SB 3 include 3 paid sick days for IHSS home care workers – the workers originally carved out of the state paid sick days law.

The California Work & Family Coalition applauds this important step as we work together strengthen paid sick days laws for all California workers.  As Laphonza Butler, president of SEIU 2015, which represents long term care workers, stated, “Today, we’ve succeeded in raising wages and ensuring that home care workers are no longer excluded from paid sick days. Our movement delivered the biggest victory yet in the fight against poverty and income inequality.”
