Colorado Coalition Defeats “SCAMLI”

News

Two weeks ago, 9to5 and the CO FAMLI Coalition successfully defeated HB19-1058, a conservative bill that tried to make the case that business tax credits and paid leave savings accounts are a genuine solution for paid leave. Branding the bill “SCAMLI,” the coalition led an effective campaign to educate legislators and the public around the false promises of this policy. Unlike the CO FAMLI Act, “SCAMLI” burdens tax payers with the cost of tax credits, is only available to high income earners who can save enough money for their own leave, does not require employers to give time off even if workers have savings, and does not guarantee workers a job when they return from leave. During the committee hearing, when the bill proponents were asked how this will create more access to paid leave for Coloradans, they themselves conceded “it’s impossible to figure out.” Years of organizing by 9to5 and the coalition has made paid leave an issue everyone wants to attach their name to – but it’s only the CO FAMLI Act that provides a paid leave solution for all! Check out this coalition flyer for a side by side comparison of FAMLI vs. SCAMLI.
