(WASHINGTON, DC)––Family Values @ Work is a movement network of grassroots coalitions in more than two dozen states working to win paid family and medical leave, earned sick and safe days, and affordable, high-quality childcare at the state and national levels.
Family Values at Work (FV@W) is devastated to learn of the horrific shooting that killed five people and wounded 18 at Club Q in Colorado Springs, CO. This senseless attack and loss of life is intolerable, yet takes its place in a long history of attacks against the LGBTQ+ community. Today is Trans Day of Remembrance. This violent shooting reinforces the need for Trans Day of Remembrance to disrupt these patterns of targeting and killing people in the queer community.
Attacks on the queer community are symptomatic of a nation that systemically practices intolerance and perpetuates hate through a white, male, cis patriarchy. This narrative has recently become more prominent, as politicians and others seek to demonize the LGBTQ+ community. FV@W decries this affront to the safety and peace of the queer community in Colorado Springs, and demands justice for all families impacted. An attack on any of us is an attack on all of us.
Family Values @ Work is committed to building a nation where there is racial, economic, and gender justice for all. That means ensuring that everyone can live their lives fully and authentically, when and wherever they choose. This is our mission.
We refuse to become desensitized to such violent manifestations of hate. We commend and honor the long-standing tradition of marginalized communities in defending themselves when they’re targeted for violence. We are ready to support our Colorado family and partners in any capacity as we mourn together, but in power with the community to address this hate crime.
