Because the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) only provides unpaid leave, it is insufficient in providing support for workers who need time off from work to care for themselves or a loved one without facing financial hardship. FMLA allows job protected leave; however, with only 16% of employers providing some type of paid leave, most workers cannot afford to take unpaid time off.

The Campaign for Paid Family Leave’s recommendations ensure that Connecticut’s system of paid leave will be fair and helps employees maintain financial security while they take time off from work to care for themselves or a loved one. The Campaign’s suggestions highlight the need for accessibility, expand FMLA’s definition of family member, set a level of reimbursement that will support low-wage workers, and extend additional job protection and anti-discrimination provisions. The Campaign also recommends a minimum of 12 weeks of paid leave and the ability to take leave incrementally. Currently, the Campaign is hoping for the passage of a bill during the current legislative session.
