In the wake of the horrific shooting at UNLV, we’ve hit a disheartening benchmark – the number of mass killings this year is higher than in any year since at least 2006. To us, the numbers of mass killings are real people and communities deserving of care that are forever changed. We commit to not becoming silent and desensitized despite living under constant trauma. We commit to continuing to dream of a country where communities are safe, cared for, and supported to thrive. FV@W is in solidarity with NV and our partner Make it Work Nevada as they mourn, lament, and make and take the time to heal in community. And we’re in solidarity with them in righteous anger that another mass shooting has happened and has hit home. And while our children are traumatized by having to practice live-shooter drills in schools and many of us are becoming keenly aware that there is no safety from gun violence anywhere – our elected officials and policymakers seem desensitized to this life-robbing social issue. As we were yesterday, we will be here today and tomorrow and the day after until all of our communities can live in a society where safety, dignity and care are valued.
