MLOV Response to the State of the Union (SOTU)

In this year’s State of the Union address, President Biden’s discussion on immigrants was predominantly centered around his proposal to bolster border security. This singular focus overlooks the diverse array of concerns that weigh on immigrant families across the United States. It is essential that the Biden administration recognize that immigrant communities are invested in much more than just immigration policies.

Issues that resonate deeply to immigrant families are those that are shared by other working families in the US. These include inflation, language access, job opportunities, healthcare accessibility, crime prevention, and housing affordability. It’s crucial to understand that immigrants are not solely concerned with immigration or border security. They are integral members of society who seek inclusion in broader conversations that shape the nation’s agenda. Fostering a robust economy and infrastructure development are just as pertinent to immigrant families as they are to any other American citizen. Immigrant families aspire to see policies that support their goals for economic prosperity and social well-being including paid family and medical leave, affordable childcare, fair wages, and resources to help them and their children access education and training opportunities. These are not just immigrant issues, they are American issues that demand attention and action from our leaders.

As we approach a critical election this November, it’s imperative for President Biden to elevate immigrant working families beyond border control talking points. They deserve to be at the forefront of policy discussions, with their concerns and aspirations driving meaningful change.

Investing in immigrant families isn’t just a moral imperative, it’s an investment in the future of our nation. By acknowledging their contributions and addressing their needs, we pave the way for a more inclusive and prosperous society for all. President Biden’s commitment to funding policies that address these concerns at the necessary scale will not only benefit immigrant communities but will also strengthen the fabric of our nation as a whole.
