I need my income to take care of my children

Letters to POTUS

Dear President Obama,

My name is DeLonda, I am a 31 year old mother of 2. For the three months, I’ve been blessed to be able to take care of my mother full time as a home care provider. My mom had a stroke in March 2013 while living in Atlanta and I had to relocate her back to Milwaukee because she wasn’t receiving the proper care. It’s been really difficult to manage both the care of my children and mother. Gratefully, I was able to use Family Medical Leave I while working. FMLA helped me keep my job while caring for my mother – but it was unpaid.

Being a single mother, I need my income to take care of my children, but not at the expense of my mother’s health. I love my mother and want her to have the best care possible. I strongly know that allowing workers to get paid under the expanded Family Medical Leave legislation is a necessary step for healthy families and communities.

I appreciate all that you and your administration have done to advocate for working families who need new public policy – such as the Healthy Families Act and the FAMILY Act in order to do their best on the job, while providing critical caregiving for family members.

I urge you to continue to use your office to build public awareness and support for these important policy solutions.

Sincerely,

DeLonda
Milwaukee, WI
