The House passed H.R. 5, the so-called “Parents Bill of Rights Act”
It is unbelievable that a bill that would put into effect several anti-LGBTQ+ provisions, including provisions that would require the forced outing of transgender students is even being considered at any level of government,” said Family Values @ Work Executive Director, Josie Kalipeni. “This bill mirrors bigoted legislation spreading across the country that compromises the safety of LGBTQ+ children and their families and, again, is actually anti-life by the very same people who claim to be pro-life. “
According to GLAD Executive Director Janson Wu, H.R. 5 would also “insert the federal government as a national school board, undermine local control, and hurt the ability of both parents and teachers to support children.” This dangerous legislation undermines this country’s education system and is especially detrimental to LBGTQ+ families and families of color.
“When elected officials could be considering real solutions that keep children safe – like gun reform – and keep children cared for – like paid leave – they choose the exact opposite. This is a direct affront to our children’s lives from people who claim to be ‘pro-life.’ A threat to any of our children is an attack on all children. As a movement working for the best interests of all US families, including LGBTQ+ children and their caregivers, we must unite our voices to speak out against injustice whenever and wherever it occurs,” said Kalipeni. “Our Family Values @ Work network calls on the Senate to defend LGBTQ+ rights and reject H.R. 5.”
