Protecting the Right to Organize

News

There are two bills, the “Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act” (H.R. 2474/S. 1306) and the “Public Service Freedom to Negotiate Act” (H.R. 3463/S.1970), aimed at protecting the right for workers to organize and negotiate for decent pay and working conditions. We need you to call your Member of Congress to make sure they are co-sponsors of both bills and that they will vote YES for workers.

  1. Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act: H.R. 2474 Chairman Bobby Scott (D-VA) and S.1306 Senator Patty Murray (D-WA)
    1. Imposes financial penalties against employers who violate workers’ rights;
    2. Eliminates loopholes that allow employers to misclassify employees as independent contractors;
    3. Eliminates right-to-work laws;
    4. Protects employees’ right to strike, boycott, and other acts of solidarity.
  2. Public Service Freedom to Negotiate Act: H.R. 3463 Representative Matt Cartwright (D-PA) and S. 1970 Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI)
    1. Sets a minimum nationwide standard for collective bargaining rights that all states must provide to public sector workers;
    2. Right to form or join a union to collectively bargain over wages, hours, and terms and conditions of employment; and
    3. Utilize voluntary payroll deduction for union dues.

Take Action Today!  Call your Senators and Representatives and make the connections between the freedom to organize and negotiate on the job and the freedom to care for our families.

  • Co-sponsor if they haven’t and champion these bills if they have.
  • Tell them of the many workers who’ve been denied a voice on the job because they lack a union
  • Remind them of how much unions have meant to greater economic equality, family health and wellness and leveling of the playing field.
