Second Texas City Wins Paid Sick Days

Media Center

Statement from Family Values @ Work

“Family Values @ Work congratulates Working Texans for Paid Sick Time on its leadership in the paid sick days victory in San Antonio. The coalition, which collected nearly twice as many signatures as required, had urged the San Antonio City Council to listen to the will of the voters and pass the ordinance.

“The San Antonio paid sick time law will mean that 350,000 more workers should soon have access to six to eight paid sick days, relieving them of the stress of having to choose between paying bills or following doctor’s orders. The ordinance will also benefit San Antonians who already earn such time but aren’t allowed to use it for a sick child or to deal with the aftermath of domestic or sexual violence.

“Like their partners in Austin, activists in San Antonio worked for this measure in the face of scare tactics from conservatives in the Texas legislature who are plotting to steal these wins next January. But this broad and diverse coalition will not be deterred. Their victory comes on the heels of Austin’s paid sick days win earlier this year, a clear sign that momentum for these policies is growing not only nationwide, but across the South. As Texas voters make choices this election season, they’ll be keeping their eye on who does or does not stand with working families and local democracy.”
