Makeda began working in the nonprofit arena when she joined a national nonprofit in Columbia, Md. Through her work, she was able to support community leaders to improve housing conditions for people in some of the most poverty-stricken areas in the country. In these communities, those with the greatest need were women and children of color. Makeda was instrumental in giving a voice to the voiceless while highlighting the struggles facing families in low-income communities.
As a mother of three, Makeda understands the challenges facing working parents and the impact paid maternity leave or lack thereof has on a family. Everyone deserves the right to have paid family and medical leave. As the communications associate, Makeda works with the communications director to support FV@W’s mission to secure racial, gender, and economic justice for all.
When Makeda has free time (which is not very often) she spends it with family, painting, learning a new craft, or walking her dog.
