The Family Values @ Work network mourns Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Press Releases

Today, Wendy Chun-Hoon, executive director of Family Values @ Work—a network of 27 state coalitions working for paid sick and safe days, family and medial leave insurance, and policies that value working families—released this statement acknowledging the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg:

The Family Values @ Work community mourns the loss of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Justice Ginsburg’s impact on the Court, and this nation’s history, is one that can never be erased or duplicated.

During her time on the nation’s highest court, Justice Ginsburg proved herself a staunch protector of human dignity. Only the second woman appointed to the Supreme Court, Justice Ginsburg was an ardent feminist. Her votes in the Court were monumental in decisions on discrimination on the basis of sex. And her tenure contributed to decisions that advanced the dignity and rights of working people, including her famous dissent in the Ledbetter v. Goodyear case, in which she elevated the pernicious and incremental ways pay discrimination happens against women workers. Other powerful dissents against injustice included Justice Ginsburg’s defense of the Voting Rights Act and her advocacy for a woman’s right to choose.

We join the millions of mourners worldwide, and we are resolute in our demand that Justice Ginsburg’s successor be someone who values working people’s lives and women’s equality, and is committed to building on her legacy of caring, equity, and respect.

We invite you to join us in calling on U.S. senators of all parties to reject Senate Majority Leader McConnell’s hypocritical tactics–attempting to push through the confirmation of a new Supreme Court justice so close to the election–and to demand the process be placed on hold until after the inauguration.
