The California Work & Family Coalition is a collaborative of unions and community groups protecting every Californian’s right to a job and a life. We believe that no one should have to risk their job to take care of themselves or their families. We organize working families, raise public awareness to build family friendly workplaces in California, and focus on transforming California laws to provide all workers critical rights to:

  • Paid sick days to treat personal illness, care for a sick family member and get preventive care;
  • Affordable family and medical leave to treat serious and chronic health conditions and care for a seriously ill family member;
  • Affordable pregnancy and bonding leave for new parents; and
  • Workplaces free from discrimination and retaliation against workers with caregiving responsibilities.

Building on the success of California’s 2003 paid leave law, and the passage of the country’s first city-wide paid sick days law in San Francisco, the Coalition has developed a training on Family Leave Rights for new partners and for California residents, a Guide to Implementing Paid Family Leave that’s designed to inform other states interested in implementing a family leave insurance program drawing on lessons from California’s experience, and has just signed into law a bill requiring employers to continue to provide health coverage for women on pregnancy or childbirth-related leave.
